The first heroes of Liberty Hill came in wagons and settled near the San Gabriel River. We’re sure there were doubters as the pioneers fought with nature to create a safe settlement for their families and friends. Those were rough days with an even tougher environment. But holding on and making things better for the next generation has become an honored tradition in this part of Northwest Williamson County.
History tells us that in the early days of Liberty Hill, pioneers came to town and started a business, relocated their family and added to the community in whatever way they could. There was a welcoming spirit of entrepreneurship. These were often people from other states, even other countries. But they dreamed and they built. Whether it was large ranches, small farms, local businesses or the spectacular art of the massive sculptures around town, Liberty Hill was moving along through history.
Hard times came to Liberty Hill’s door on many occasion. Changes in the economy, shifts in geopolitics and the global market for agriculture and livestock production are but a few of the troubles to pass through our town. As urban centers grew, Liberty Hill seemed to dwindle away even losing its beloved high school at one time during the 1970s.
During this same time, many rural communities in Texas were lost to history, in fact, many of Liberty Hill’s neighboring communities suffered the same fate. Whether economic problems, political mistakes, or just poor planning — those communities are gone forever. But Liberty Hill and its people stubbornly held on and refused to disappear.
Whatever you’ve heard about Liberty Hill’s past attitude toward local business or even some of the political efforts to keep city government operating under a shade tree somewhere is clearly just part of Liberty Hill’s past. It’s true that our town was held captive at times, but we’ve emerged from those days strong, vibrant and ready for you to make our community your home.
